Rep. Allen West’s Sloppy Words about President Obama

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black WorldScholarship in Action

Below you can watch the video of Allen West, a black Republican, engaging in a highly-disrespectful attack on President Barack Obama. West seems to swim like a happy little pig in the attention he is receiving from Fox News for his willingness to undermine the credibility of another black man in ways that would be maligned if he were white. Because he’s black, it’s hard to accuse West of racism. But he can certainly be accused of being a tool for racists to promote an agenda built on sloppy, malicious rhetoric feeding on white American fears of black men in true positions of power.

Antoine Dodson Arrested for Weed Possession

antoine dodson

Alabama — The problem with being a viral star is that everyone knows when you get in trouble, too.

Antoine Dodson, the viral sensation who shot to fame when he jumped in on a local news report and screamed “Hide ya kids, hide ya wife!” was arrested early Saturday morning in Huntsville, Alabama on a charge of misdemeanor marijuana possession. He was also hit with a number of other charges, including speeding and failing to show up to court for a previous traffic violation.

Malcolm’s Daughter Walks Off Interview When Asked About Her Father’s Sexuality

Your Black World reports

It appears that Malcolm X’s daughter did not take well to piercing questions from Michel Martin on a recent NPR segment.  Ilyasah Shabazz walked off the interview after being asked one too many questions related to the release of a new book about her father’s life.  The interview transcript is below:

MICHEL MARTIN, host:

You might have heard about a controversial new biography of Malcolm X, "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention" was written by prominent African-American scholar, Manning Marable, who died on April 1st just days before the book was released. The book has gotten a lot of attention, in part, because of that unfortunate circumstance. But also because the book makes some provocative assertions about the activist's life and death, including some assertions about his early years, speculations about his personal relationships and the circumstances of his murder.

Gov’t Tells Snoop He Can’t Sell His Destructive New Drink

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black WorldScholarship in Action

Sixteen separate states are stepping in the way of Snoop Dogg’s latest big money venture with the Pabst Brewing Company. Attorneys General from Arizona, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio, Tennessee, Washington, Utah, California, Idaho and Connecticut stood against the release of Snoop’s drink in their territories. Additionally, Guam's attorney general and the city attorney general of San Francisco all signed a resolution stating that the drink Blast by Colt 45 is dangerous and being marketed to young people.

The drink contains 12 percent alcohol and is sold in 23.5 and seven ounce containers. It is said to have as much alcohol as five beers in one can. There are several fruity flavors for the drink, including: grape, raspberry watermelon, strawberry lemonade and blueberry pomegranate flavors.

Black Republican Allen West Calls Obama a “Low Level Socialist Agitator”

Allen West Obama Socialist

Your Black World reports

Allen West, a Republican Congressman from Florida, engaged in some interesting black-on-black political crime this week by referring to President Barack Obama as a “low level socialist agitator.”  During an interview with Laura Ingraham, West attacked the president in ways that are rare for an African American.

The Congressman referred to President Obama as a “low level socialist agitator” and said that he displayed “dictator like arrogance” during his budget speech last week. West then went on to Fox News and stood by his remarks:

Man Gets $85K for Being Falsely Accused of Rape

From Philly.com

Eugene Robinson wants the world to know that he is not a rapist.

Ever since police mistook him for a wanted sex offender in 2008, he's told anyone who would listen that they have the wrong guy.

Now, after a three-year struggle to clear his name, Robinson, 60, can breathe easier, even chuckle at the horrific mix-up that landed him in jail for a year and prompted his fiancee to leave. Earlier this month, city lawyers admitted that police made a mistake and agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by Robinson.

"I'm not an angel," Robinson said. "Don't claim to be an angel. I've done some things, but see, I would never violate a woman. Even in my worst days, I would never violate a woman."

Robinson's Kafkaesque nightmare began Aug. 4, 2008, when he opened up the Daily News and saw his mugshot under the headline "WEEK'S MOST WANTED."

Donna Brazile to Meet with Cornel West to Discuss President Obama

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World – Scholarship in Action

The black political grapevine recently informed me that respected political strategist Donna Brazile plans to meet with Professor Cornel West at Princeton University. The meeting was apparently arranged in response to the “moral outrage” that West has expressed toward the Obama Administration over recent weeks. The disappointment came to a head during a highly-publicized feud between Prof. West and Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC.

Dr. West’s outspoken demeanor couldn’t come at a worse time for President Obama and his party. As the Democrats work to smooth talk their way out of a year of tone deaf behavior toward a suffering African American community, West comes in as one of a small number of major black public figures willing to rain on the presidential party.

Youth Offenders with Life IN Prison Asking for a Second Chance

From the NY Times

CHARLESTON, Mo. — More than a decade ago, a 14-year-old boy killed his stepbrother in a scuffle that escalated from goofing around with a blowgun to an angry threat with a bow and arrow to the fatal thrust of a hunting knife.

The boy, Quantel Lotts, had spent part of the morning playing with Pokémon cards. He was in seventh grade and not yet five feet tall.

Mr. Lotts is 25 now, and he is in the maximum-security prison here, serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for murder.

The victim’s mother, Tammy Lotts, said she lost two children on that November day in 1999. One was a son, Michael Barton, who was 17 when he died. The other was a stepson, Mr. Lotts.

NAACP Report on Gulf Coast: Healing Is Nowhere Near Being Complete

“My Name is 6508799”

State of the Gulf, One Year After the Oil Drilling Disaster

This numbered moniker is how a participant at the Destin, Florida Town Hall meeting with Gulf Coast Claims Facility Administrator Kenneth Feinberg introduced herself.

For many residents residing in communities along the Gulf of Mexico, they feel as if their lives have been reduced to a number in the Gulf Coast Claims Facility database which holds so much power over life, livelihood, health and overall wellbeing.

One year after the Gulf Oil Drilling Disaster of April 20, 2010, thousands of Gulf residents not only have not been “made whole” from the disaster, but many have faced elevated levels of toxins in their bloodstreams, community conflicts, destruction of families, culture erosion, loss of property, including homes, cars, boats, etc., and, for many, an end to their way of life for the foreseeable future. Only a fraction of Gulf residents truly believe that the systems that have been set up to serve them have made demonstrable strides towards “making it right”, as has become the mantra representing the aim of recovery and restoration processes.

Based on dozens of interviews with affected communities and the organizations that represent them, a review of consensus documents and other reports from technical  experts as well as organizations representing thousands of gulf residents, and examination of response systems set up to address the Gulf Oil Drilling Disaster, this report tells the illustrative stories and shares the analysis of the pervasive unmet needs and gaps in the response system one year after the Deepwater Horizon Macondo Well explosion took 11 lives and dealt a crippling blow to the ecosystem, including the communities, of the Gulf of Mexico.

Black Cop Sues Harvard for Racism

Black Cop Sues Harvard Over Racial Slurs, Lack Of Promotion

BOSTON — The Harvard University Police Department passed over a black officer for a number of promotions and superiors routinely made racist remarks about blacks and Latinos, according to a federal lawsuit.

The complaint by Officer George Pierce, a veteran patrolman who is black, said he applied for open sergeant positions a number of times only to be passed over for less-qualified, non-black employees. The reason Pierce didn’t get promoted was his race, the lawsuit alleged, citing various instances when Pierce sought a sergeant spot but was turned down.

“Throughout Pierce’s employment at Harvard, Harvard and the department have created and maintained a pervasive racially-biased environment within the department,” the lawsuit said.

Black First Grader Handcuffed After Temper Tantrum

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World – Scholarship in Action

A 7-year old special ed student became upset while decorating an easter egg, and ended up being handcuffed by the NYPD as a result.  Joseph Anderson, a first-grader, was taken to the hospital in metal handcuffs by the police, in spite of the fact that his mother said she was on her way to pick him up.

"He was crying and saying, 'I want Mommy,'" said his mother, Jessica Anderson. "Why handcuff him? Why get the cops involved? He's only 7."

According to his mother, Joseph has been wetting himself and vomiting since the incident, which took place on April 13.

"If he hears an ambulance, he runs under the bed and screams, 'They're going to get me,'" said his mother. "He's really traumatized. I don't let him watch the news anymore, because if he sees cops, he cries."

Your Black News: President Obama Holds a Townhall with Facebook

Obama visits Facebook

By Peter Nicholas, Washington Bureau

April 20, 2011, 8:05 p.m.

Reporting from Palo Alto—

Hoping to rekindle excitement among younger voters, President Obama spoke at a town-hall meeting hosted by Facebook on Wednesday and asked for help in beating back "radical" Republican budget proposals.
He sat on a stage next to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who served as moderator and funneled largely friendly questions to a president who makes extensive use of social media in reaching out to voters.

Zuckerberg confessed to being nervous, but the two bantered easily. Obama made a light reference to the 26-year-old's billionaire status. In describing his tax plan, Obama said that he and "frankly, you, Mark," can afford to pay "a little more in taxes."
Taking questions submitted through Facebook and from an audience of company employees, Obama advised listeners not to get frustrated by protracted debates in Washington. He conceded that some of his 2008 voters might be asking why progress on many issues hasn't come sooner. But he urged them not to give up on his agenda.

Reports: Jalen Rose Failed Several Tests Before His Arrest

COREY WILLIAMS,Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) -- Former Michigan and NBA player Jalen Rose told authorities he hadn't been drinking and performed poorly on several tests to determine if he was intoxicated after rolling his Cadillac Escalade on a snowy Michigan road, according to a police report.

The report from the West Bloomfield Township police, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information request, also said Rose registered a 0.088 blood-alcohol level two hours after the March 11 crash. Michigan's legal limit is 0.08.

Rose, 38, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

He was driving the 2004 SUV along Walnut Lake Road when it veered off the roadway about 2:10 a.m. and rolled over just east of Middlebelt, about 20 miles northwest of Detroit. Neither Rose nor his female passenger was hurt in the crash.

President Obama Becomes Visibly Irritated with Texas Reporter

Your Black World Reports

In the video below, President Barack Obama is in an interview with a Texas reporter who seems to test his patience. This is not surprising, since Texas is likely the most hostile state toward the president.  They’ve been vocal about actually leaving the United States in protest to Obama’s election.  One can’t help but to connect the state’s anger toward Obama with the fact that Texas also happens to be arguably the most racist state in America, with black male incarceration rates that can be described as nothing less than a holocaust.

Tonya McDowell Update: The Parents of Connecticut Come Together

From Dr. Boyce Watkins:

As you know, the Your Black World Coalition is seeking justice for Tonya McDowell, the homeless single mother who was arrested for sending her child to the “wrong” school district (similar to the case of Kelley Williams-Bolar a few months ago).

I just spoke yesterday with Gwen Samuel from the Connecticut Parents’ Union.  She has informed me of the situation on the ground in Connecticut with regard to educational inequality.  As in many other cities across the nation, the schools in Norwalk, CT (where Ms. McDowell sent her child) are far superior to the schools in Bridgeport, CT (where she was legally expected to send her little boy).  Therefore, while we can’t say for sure exactly why Ms. McDowell broke the law to send her child to the Norwalk school system, it is clear that there is a strong incentive to break the law to get access to a quality education.

Black Leaders Gather to “Measure the Movement” – Watch the Video

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World – Scholarship in Action

Earlier this month, I participated in “Measuring the Movement,” a forum that brought together 10 leaders from the black community to discuss the issues that are pertinent to all of us.  The forum was hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network, and became a productive gathering that laid out a variety of visions for the African American community.

My goal in being part of this forum was to do what I could to best represent the 55,000 members of the Your Black World Coalition and to talk about what I consider to be the Holy Trinity of Black Oppression:  The economic system, the educational system and the criminal justice system.

Why Would Republican Leaders Put President Obama’s Face on a Chimp?

obamamonkey

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the Republican Party does it again. Orange County Republican Committee member Marilyn Davenport is in hot water after distributing an email that features President Obama as the child of a family of chimpanzees.  In the email, which was widely-distributed, the long-standing committee member sent out the picture with the caption, “Now you know why – No birth certificate!”

County GOP Chairman Scott Baugh has called for Davenport’s resignation, saying that the picture was "dripping with racism and is in very poor taste." He also referred the matter to the GOP Ethics Committee.  But in spite of the backlash from many of her fellow Republicans, there are some in the leadership who are standing firm with Davenport.

Ms. Davenport, however, seems to think that the email has nothing to do with racism.  She described the email as a “joke” and wanted to find out who leaked the email, writing “Anyone brave enough to come forward?”  She also had this to say when contacted by reporters:

Luke from 2 Live Crew Running for Miami Mayor

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World – Scholarship in Action

“Uncle Luke” from 2 Live Crew has decided to become the mayor of Miami.  At least he’s going to try.  Luke, who is now 50 years old, claims that the run is a serious one, and not some kind of joke.

"My major hurdle is people taking me seriously, a lot of people think this is a joke," said Uncle Luke. "I call it a banana republic and I’m serious about it. You look at the commission and they make their own rules as they go, regardless of what the county attorney says, they make their own rules, just do what they want. They have no respect for the people."

Do I consider the campaign to be a joke?  Well, I guess it depends on how Luke goes about trying to become mayor.  Of course he probably won’t win the election, so perhaps my personal speculation is moot.  But I have to at least give Luke credit for trying to become involved in his community.  Luke interviewed me for his radio show about a year ago, and I’ll admit that the show was not a serious one.  However, I could sense that beneath the wild, raunchy, comedic demeanor lies a man with a keen understanding of the world around him.

Survey Says that Most Black People Believe Nation of Islam Leaders Ordered Assassination of Malcolm X

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World – Scholarship in Action

According to a recent survey conducted by YourBlackWorld.com, three out of four African Americans (76.8%) believe that the Nation of Islam was behind the assassination of Malcolm X. Additionally, two-thirds of the respondents (63.3%) believe that the government played some role in the assassination, by either being directly involved or helping someone else to kill Malcolm.

The results of the survey are interesting in light of the book written by the late Manning Marable, the Columbia University Professor who died shortly before the release of his book. Marable goes into detail about the life of Malcolm X, elaborating on the role that was allegedly played by Nation of Islam leadership.

Officer Shoots Black Man, then Gets Award for It

Football Player Shot_3271980.jpg

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University – Scholarship in Action

The Pleasantville Police Department in New York upset the African American community by giving an Officer of the Year Award to the policeman who shot a young black college student in a racially-volatile incident.  Danroy “DJ” Henry was shot by officer Aaron Hess last year at a night club under questionable circumstances.

“The (Pleasantville Police Benevolent Association’s) Award is an expression of support for the dignified and professional manner in which Officer Hess has conducted himself throughout this ordeal,” wrote President Matthew Listwan in a statement.

Hess shot into Henry’s car on October 17 after the officer inexplicably landed on the young man’s hood.  Henry, who was 20 years old on the night he died, is accused by officers of being drunk behind the wheel and speeding away without stopping according to the officers’ instructions.  The family claims that Henry was following orders to drive away when Officer Hess jumped in front of the car.  Henry’s family attorney, Michael Sussman, says that firing at a moving vehicle and jumping in front of it are violations of state law and department rules.

What’s Wrong with LeBron James Mother? Video Shown of Gloria Fighting with Hotel Valet

Three thoughts that come to mind as I watch the video of LeBron James’ mother getting into a fight with the valet at a hotel:

1) What the hayell?  - Yes, if my mama ever acts this way, she and I might have to have a nasty conversation or two.  I truly feel sorry for LeBron, who has been embarrassed by his mother in the past on multiple occasions.

2) This is what happens when we drink too much in public and forget that our child is a celebrity.  When you’re in the public eye, everyone is always watching.  You can’t sneeze, use the bathroom, or buy groceries without people scrutinizing every little thing you do.  Alcohol reduces our inhibitions and makes us unaware of our surroundings.  That’s why I don’t drink.

Read up: The Text from President Obama’s Deficit Speech

Good afternoon. It’s great to be back at GW. I want you to know that one of the reasons I kept the government open was so I could be here today with all of you. I wanted to make sure you had one more excuse to skip class. You’re welcome.

Of course, what we’ve been debating here in Washington for the last few weeks will affect your lives in ways that are potentially profound. This debate over budgets and deficits is about more than just numbers on a page, more than just cutting and spending. It’s about the kind of future we want. It’s about the kind of country we believe in. And that’s what I want to talk about today.

WASHINGTON (WUSA/AP) -- U.S.Capitol Police say they arrested 41 people on Constitution Avenue in front of the Hart Senate Office Building on Monday at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Those people arrested include D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and D.C councilmembers who were protesting restrictions placed on the district as part of the federal budget deal. All of the people who were arrested are charged with Unlawful Assembly (Blocking Passage), which is a misdemeanor that can be resolved by paying a $50 fine.

They are currently being processed by U.S. Capitol Police.

Mayor Vincent Gray and others sat down and blocked the street in front of a Senate office building Monday. They chanted and shouted, "Hey, hey, no, no, those D.C. riders have got to go."

Congress oversees D.C.'s budget and laws and can pull funding for programs it doesn't like during the budgeting process.
