If Obama Was Dark-Skinned

As the primaries and debates become more and more intense I realize how I'm so out of touch with politics. I've never followed politics and honestly I don’t really have an interest in it. I'm voting for God, he's ran my life without a problem. I'm listening to the conversations amongst my peers and it seems that most of them are voting for Obama. He "Appears" to be the best candidate for some people. I wonder how much of that interest in Obama is "biased". Some of my African American counterparts will lie to me and say "Oh I like his stance on blah blah" but in reality you just want him to win because he's Black. Some people that I ask will come out and be honest and say "I want him to win because he's Black". I appreciate that honesty, but it’s still the wrong reason to vote for somebody. Part of my African-American-ness wants Obama to win. It would be a monumental day in history to see the White House turned Black, but I cant be blinded by the fact he's black.

I'm sure that brother (Obama) is qualified. I'm sure he would do a bang-up job as president. While I'm very confident in the brother's skills, I'm also quite afraid for him and his African American supporters. He will be a Black president but he won’t be "Black people's president" I'm not saying he will go in the office and turn colors and forget about Black people, but I have a strong belief that every action he makes in that position will have to appear un-biased. Rightfully so, yet a lot of people think he's the savior for Black people. Our country hasn’t made a true effort to put Blacks on the same schedule as Whites, I don’t think one man can turn all that around in 4 years. I feel for Obama if he gets elected because he will be the most watched, dissected, hated and loved president of all time. Our country is barely ready to see Black senators, a Black president is a MAJOR stride in our racist society.

I had a very deep conversation with my roommate and a fellow friend about politics. One of the issues that kept being brought up was the idea of perception in politics. Perception plays a role in our everyday lives. We give a lot of instant credibility based on perception. If the person looks competent then we believe they are. How many times have you thought somebody was a certain way based on first impression? This instant extra credit that we give people is sometimes validated but oftentimes its not. In relation to these elections, I have a theory. I could be totally wrong but I think that I'm totally right. I don’t think Obama would have this much support from the White community if he was dark skinned. I'll repeat for the people who thought I was joking by saying that, "I don’t think Obama would have this much support from the White community if he was dark skinned" Honestly speaking, I think some Black people would have that same issue as well. Our country is very image driven. Lets be honest, Obama could never have dreads. Obama looks like the ideal African American candidate at this time in our society. Some people will say that Jesse and Al Sharpton(both past candidates) were a tad bit darker. Obama is almost fair skinned like Lena Horne. I believe darker skin adds a new element of instant credibility than lighter skin. We can go back to slavery and see that. I would have been outside in the fields regardless of my intellectual capacity. Obama would be in the house. We know that brother is real smart and he deserves every accolade that he gets, but I believe that if he was dark-skinned White and Black people alike would be more skeptical of voting for him. If you look at corporate America, music videos, television and other places you'll find that most of the people you "HEAR and SEE" are lighter skinned Black people. I know there are a lot of dark skinned successful people but the public wants to see that lighter skin. Its something about that lighter skin that makes people feel comfortable. I believe our society can accept a dark skin brother/sister excelling in sports but in the realms of education and corporate America we want to see lighter skin. It’s a lot of self hatred and racism out there believe me. Don’t get this article confused I think Obama is the man, but his bi-racial-ness has definitely helped him.

Have you seen Mark Brown, the news anchor on Channel 7. He's dark skinned but nonetheless like Obama he's scutinized and must maintain a neutrality unlike the white anchors. That's okay with me. Hillary Clinton is clearly not the better candidate because of her flawed history as First Lady both of a unprosecuted criminal nature and her inflexible political work on the healthcare plan she worked on. Then she had the adacity to claim in tearful statement that she feared this country might fall if she was not voted President and the next day her husband, Former President Bill Clinton went on the attack going so far as to use Osuma's name in the same breath with Obama's. I expected that from others but not the Former President. I pray like hell that Barrack Obama wins this Presidency because record speaks for him. I am honored that he identifies as African-American because his father's people suffered the loss of their people to slavery while our foreparents endured the hardship of slavery. Sure he'll be scrutinized but he's willing to pay that price.

i agree with you about everyone wanting to vote for obama because he's a black man and we wanna see a black man in the white house. U are right it shouldnt just be about his race it should be on the facts, what he's trying to do to make a difference and how he's trying to make america better for everyone. as far as the dark skin theory u do have a point but unfortunately that perception will always remain because it so deeply root in us. good shyt though

All we have to say is Willie Lynch 1712. Where Lynch stated whites need to get n-word women to give them that "good white blood." Hence, Senator Biden's comment that Obama is "clean."

Yes, you are absolutely right about dark skin v. light skin. But, what is concerning me is that instead of checking if this man is qualified to run the U.S., he gets a pass by the black community because we pridefully want to be "perceived" as equal instead of achieve equality in practice as we were reaching economically from 1992 to 2000 during Clinton years.

I agree with everything you have said, my brother. In elementary school, many darker skinned children were left out of programs, no matter how smart or talented they were in favor of the lighter skinned classmates Unfortunately, we still have this mentality in OUR community. I don't know how long it will be before we get over this, but we still suffer from the HOUSE slave vs FIELD slave mentalilty. I am old school, but I don't see much of a change in OUR attitudes about light or dark skinned brothers and sisters. We still don't get it.

Anonymous said...

Wow, this is so true. When I was a child, I remember seeing the fucking light skinned kids get treated so well. We have to get over this color struck thing in our community.

Anonymous said...

I completely disagree. I truly believe, we as African-Americans need to go beyond skin tone, and get to the facts. Opportunity and education, will lead you to a certain level of success. Dividing the community won't. Vote, don't vote, for Obama, if you feel that way. If Clinton is the choice for you, so be it. The perception is what, "darker-skinned" brothers are not electable, much less acceptable. Don't worry, I'm not naive, we are in "AMERICA", and racism is still alive. But don't let your paranoia, keep you from possible making history.

No human being on the face of this earth can be held responsible for being born.... let alone what gender, ethnic group, color of thier skin, texture of thier hair, size of their lips and so on.....
What we are responsible for is how we except who we are,and how we treat our fellow human beings.
Until the black community stops looking for a stamp of approval from the white community, or any other community it will always feel inferior. No human reserves the right to stand in judgement of another human.
In regards to Barack Obama, he is a human being first, second he is anything he wants to be. Third, you have a so-called one vote, so use it or loose it, and stop worrying about what you think other people think of him. If Michelle likes it, you should love it! Take a lesson from Barack........he obviously doesn't give a damn what any of you think about him as a black man or a white man! He knows who he is, and he appears to be proud of it!
Since the voting acts bill was passed.....black people never gave any thought as to what any of the canidates looked like, as long as they promised to throw a few dollars in the black community. Now all of sudden it wants to disect Barack Obama from head to toe, inside and out.
It is what is folks. If he screws things up, remember, it was screwed up when he went in.

First it was racism and now its the skin tone among same race...why would the black race descriminate amongst themselves over skin tone....does this sound familiar DIVIDE AND RULE....This was a blueprint by white supremacist to cause chaos and confusion within the black community to eventually undermine their overall progress interms of competing with the so called superior white race.....a critical example would be south africa.

Why would most white women prefer darker skin blackmen if they themselves said they were more comfortable around lighter skin blackmen.OOPs wrong equation
black folks wiseup and stop falling for any BS.

Jerry Maduoma
I am disqusted by this topic as a Black man. I am ashamed by the attitudes of some of our elites on brother Barack Obama. We cried for years of being shot out and magenalized. Finally God decides to reward us but see how grateful we are as a people. No true brother or sister should think twice about accepting and voting for Obama. He is smart, he is wise, he is qualified, he is black, he is married to another smart sister with two beautiful children and American is crazzzzzy about him. What is your problem? Listen, self hatred manifests itself even among our smartest and boldest. Don't get caught up in it. This is the day the Lord has made, black people, rejoice and be glad in it. Stop this Dark skin crap. Vote for Obama!

Anonymous said...

I don't agree with your article. I believe that black people are the ones that see color!!! Black people are the ones that have created this divide between us. It started in slavery days but who is going to stop it and this article isn’t helping the situation. It only deepens the divide that already exists in our people. We never stand together. Always ready to stab the other in the back. Who cares how black Obama skin is???? You will never hear a white person bring up this issue, only black people!!! Just go out and vote!!!

Anonymous said...

Barack Obama, has my consideration for a vote first and foremost because he is a black man, he then has to prove to me that he has the qualifications to sustain my vote. I am sooo tired of black folks making generalizations about those of us who choose to vote for a candidate because he is white. If you think for one second that all of the folk who voted for Hilary Clinton did so because she was the best candidate and not a white women first, then add yourself to the Tavis Smiley, give me a break list.

DARTHOUSE ADVISORY said...

At first blush, my knee-jerk reaction is to agree with this author's premise. Obama's light skin so disturbed a certain white man who saw himself in his candidacy, he felt compelled to create a new identity for Brother Obama -- "halfrican."

As any student of design can tell you, color is the most defining thread within a design concept ... and politics exists by design.

On the other hand, Condoleezza Rice, Clarence Thomas, and J C Watts are anything BUT light-skinned ... and they certainly enjoyed an unfettered political ascendency as Black politicians. Curiously, they are all Republican.

Does this suggest the GOP is farther along in the issue of color than the rest of us? Have we Democrats been "left" behind??

Something to think about ...

Here we go again…now it’s in-house color issues. I’ve made this comment before. Unfortunately, I’ll repeat a prior posting I made to a different (in name only) brother...

I guess it was simply delusional of me to believe that finally, my people would wake up AND come together for a common cause. I’m amazed at how little we’ve learned and how much we have forgotten concerning our history in this nation. Especially when we have had to bear a heavy burden for America’s shortcomings. I won’t insult anyone’s intelligence or waste my time reiterating the facts; most marginally informed and competent adults should know them well enough.

But what I will repeat is this, “There are none as blind as those who will not see…the poor will always be among us,” and “ …whom shall I fear?” Some will recognize these sayings while others will not. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand their meaning—1) a sightless (in the dark) mind is shut off from reality, 2) some will choose to remain in or sustain the status quo even to their own determent, and 3) plenty will fear taking a stand that benefits the majority.

It is my hope that those suffering from Blindpoorfearaphobia will recover and start to seek out and know the hard facts of life, rise above a crumb snatchers level in society and stop running from shadows, especially their own.

nd if it's just what we see on American television why is it that when I view foriegn networks the same phenomenon is displayed?

To the poster who sited Willie Lynch, please do some research as it has been widely discredited as a historical document and was most likely written in the 1990s. It is an urban legend.

Now on to what I'd like to say if anyone is still reading these comments.

I'm shocked that the issue of skin color is even being mentioned. Don't you realize that it is only the black community that harbours this light skin vs. black skin idea? To the white population, any darker skin than white makes you automatically black. There is no shade differences when it comes to whether the white community decides to be racist or not. Which is why, while Obama is half white as much as half black, he's just seen as a black candidate.

The reason Obama's candidacy has gone farther than Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson is mainly because his approach is different mainly due to his white upbringing. He experienced both sides of his biracial heritage and can appeal to a broader audience because of that. There is nothing wrong with that because he has to appeal to the majority white population in America if he is to win the general.

I would hope that the black community would just see his candidacy for what it is, as is Hillary Clinton's. Both are historic, both are a success even though Clinton will not be the nominee. Both are a success because they are the first time in our history that a woman and a black candidate have been seen as legitimate and viable candidates.

I think that it is even more impressive that Obama has gotten this far due to his name at this time in history. That is a major accomplishment in itself and although its still mentioned every now and then, it really isn't an issue with most of the voting public.

Full disclosure, I am a white woman and do not discount that we still have a long way to go in this country concerning racism. But I would take Obama's winning the democratic nomination as the true advancement that it is in this country, especially since he has been winning so much support from older whites as well as younger. Be happy about that and celebrate it instead of trying to deconstruct as to whether he'd be where he is if he were darker. Just take it for what it is because it is a historic achievement for America as well as its black community.

And for what its worth, I mostly date black men and I prefer darker skin over lighter if we're just considering what I deem more attractive, although personality is more important than skin tone. And although I have been an Obama supporter since the 2004 DNC, he would not be the type of man I'd go for looks-wise. His appeal to me is strictly his delivery, his intelligence, his genuine hope for a better america and the fact that I believe he can pull it off. I didn't vote for him because I think he's cute.

Anonymous said...

Oh this is bullshit!!! Nobody discriminates against dark skinned women more than black men and their light skinned fetish. Whether he was light or dark, the typical black man would have nothing darker than a light skinned woman as his first lady. So I could care less about dark skinned men experiencing discrimination...

Since mention has been made on this board
of the topic of 'house and 'field' slave
-- I just wanted to note that -- actually
--- this false concept that so many people
have -- that the lighter-complexioned chattel
slaves “had it easier” or “thought they were
better” than the darker-complexioned slaves
– and / or “relaxed in the big house” while
the darker-complexioned slaves “suffered in
the fields” -- is very much like the infamous
‘Willie Lynch Letter’ Hoax) all VERY MUCH AN
URBAN MYTH (and is one which, in nearly every
way that’s possible, completely defies
the true historical recorded account.

The historical record shows that
those enslaved people who were of a
lighter-complexion (i.e. mulatto-lineage)
and that were found on the continental
United States during the antebellum
(chattel slavery) era were actually treated
MUCH, MUCH WORSE than were those enslaved
people who were of a darker-complexion.

In fact, record shows that most of the White
people (specially the White women) tended to
look upon the lighter-complexioned slaves
as being mere 'mongrels of miscegenation'
(resulting largely from the rapes caused
by overseers); in their disgust at the sight
of these slaves -- insisted that they be
"banished to the fields"; and also then
purposefully reserved most of the 'big
house' positions (ex. mammy, cook, driver,
etc) for the darker-complexioned slaves ---
who most of the White people perceived as
being "more loyal, docile, less competitive"
-- and, equally important, of a skin tone
which could never cause them to be mistaken
for 'white' or a possible member of
the plantation owners' own family.

And this maltreatment was generally
even much more so the case if the
lighter-complexioned enslaved person
was 'suspected' (by a wife, sister or
daughter -- who ran “the big house”,
while a ‘male’ family member ran “the
plantation”) of possibly being the
offspring of a plantation owner
(or his son, father or brother).

In addition, the few lighter-complexioned
enslaved people that were actually permitted
to do any work within the house were – as
punishment for having the lowly status of
“mongrel” and in order to make sure they
did not become “too uppity” -- kept under
much more severe supervision (by both the
White women who ran the plantation household
and also by the darker-complexioned enslaved
people) and under much more severe work
detail than were most of the (more trusted)
darker-complexioned enslaved people.

Books by Deborah Gray White; Paula Giddings;
J. California Cooper; bell hooks’, etc.
expose the truth about the urban-myth and
show that the lighter slaves received NO
special treatment and were (as mere "mongrels
of miscegenation") usually treated much
worse than were darker-complexioned slaves.

Hope this information is helpful
& that everyone has a great day. :D
